Beat the Streets New York (BTSNY), established in 2006, is a sport-based youth development organization whose mission is to develop the full human and athletic potential of urban youth and to strengthen the wrestling culture within New York City. BTSNY works with an average of 2,500 male and female student-athletes in all five boroughs. BTSNY and Newark (New Jersey) Board of Education formed an affiliate partnership focused on providing wrestling opportunities for fifth- through eighth-grade student-athletes in Newark.


Summary: Reporting to the BTSNY Director of Programming, the Newark Assistant Head Coach will play a critical role in launching BTSNY's first program outside of New York City. This position is focused on teaching wrestling fundamentals, instilling wrestling values and helping grow and strengthen the wrestling culture in Newark. This after-school program will be at the Oliver Street School and Luis Muñoz Marín Elementary School for boys and girls in grades fifth to eighth.


Key Responsibilities:   

  • Assist in planning and leading wrestling practices. Practices will be twice a week at each location.

  • Connect both programs to Newark high schools that sponsor wrestling

  • Ensure the schools meets BTSNY's safety standards for wrestling practice

  • Maintain accurate records of daily attendance



  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong wrestling background (as a coach and/or athlete)

  • Pass USA Wrestling’s background check and Safe Sport certification.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with diverse youth, grades fifth through eighth

  • Familiarity with Newark wrestling
