Beat the Streets Middle School and High School athletes traveled to Virginia Beach to compete in the prestigious NHSCA National tournament. Representing 11 schools, five middle schoolers and 15 high school athletes competed. This combined event provided a unique opportunity for BTS athletes as all Beat the Streets athletes were housed together, allowing these athletes to interact outside of practice and competition.
BTS Youth Director, Penn Gottfried commented, “I love this trip every year. It really gives our kids a taste of where they are at in the nation and allows them to meet other people. From a wrestling point of view, I knew that we could get some on the podium and the kids came through and did what we expected of them.”
In the middle school tournament, first-time state champion at 105 lbs. Sulayman Bah finished sixth, while three-time state champion Capri Martin finished fourth.
Bah, an eighth grader at MS 129, said, “Going into nationals, my goal was to win the championship and I believed that I could.” Looking toward the future, Bah is optimistic. “Going into freshman year, it is going to be tough, but I know years of hard work will help me do my best and achieve my goal.”
