2020 NYSPHSAA and Girls Folkstyle State Championships Recap

The high school wrestling season came to a close with the conclusion of the 2020 NYSPHSAA Boys State Wrestling Championships on Saturday, while the New York Girls Folkstyle State Invitational ended a week prior on Feb. 22.

Eight PSAL boys ended up earning All-State Honors at the NYSPHSAA, with four of them being BTS Academy members. Mckee/Staten Island Tech sophomore Alex Semenenko made it all the way to the 220-pound finals before ultimately taking second place in a tight 8-6 decision. Seniors Hector Rodriguez of Eagle Academy and Jayden Cardenas of Grand Street Campus took third and fourth, respectively, at 145 and 132 pounds.

At the girl’s state tournament, a stunning 18 PSAL student-athletes made the top three, with eight of them being from BTS.

Champions from PSAL included Hinda Doucoure of Taft (112 pounds), Nathaly Pichardo of Truman (117 pounds), Natalie Dunn of CSI (128 pounds), Kiera Cawley of Stuyvesant (148 pounds), McKenzie Samuels of Truman (159 pounds), Joanna Jones of Wingate (198 pounds), and Dom Diaz of Seward Park (225 pounds).
