Grand Street Campus is the Best In The City at the 2019 NYC Mayor’s Cup Cliff Keen Wrestling Championships

York  College, Jamaica, NY. January 16th – Grand Street Campus fended of  Monsignor Farrell to claim the title of “Best In The City” and the 2019 NYC  Mayor’s Cup Cliff Keen Wrestling Championships. Heading in to the championship  finals Grand Street Campus held a narrow 165 - 151 lead over Farrell, but with  finals wins at 99lbs, 113lbs, and 120lbs the Lions quickly took a narrow 165.5  – 165 lead.  In the 132lb finals Grand Street Campus’s Jayden Cardenas faced off against Poly Prep’s Dove  Bonjean-Alpart. The match between the two defending Mayor’s Cup Champions lived  up to it’s hype. With the match tied 8-8 and 37 seconds left on the clock Cardenas cut Bonjean-Alpart to his feet giving the Poly Prep wrestlers a 9-8  lead.  At the 20 second mark Cardens  caught his opponent in an over under and threw Bonjean-Alpart to his back.  At the 1 second mark the official slapped the  mat for the pin giving Cardenas the 132lb title and his team an additional six points to reclaim the lead 171-165.5. Farrell’s last opportunity for points  came in the 145lb finals, but Brooklyn Tech’s Jack Reusing put Farrell’s Ryan  Siller to his back at the end of the first period; the fall sealed the team  victory for Grand Street Campus. The top five teams on the day were Grand  Street Campus (171 points), Monsignor Farrell (165.5 points), Tottenville (140  points), Brooklyn Tech (139.5 points), and Poly Prep (99 points). The PSAL crowned 10 individual champions on the day, while the CHSAA claimed 4  individual golds, and NYSAIS put 1 on the top of the podium. Full brackets can  be found HERE
