It was an eventful Sunday on January 27th as Beat the Streets sent 36 scrappy young wrestlers to the Mahopac Youth Tournament in Upstate New York. Led by Barry Hart and a collection of other dedicated NYC youth wrestling coaches, Beat the Streets brought back an impressive haul with 26 top 3 places and a 4th place team rank. The Beat the Streets tournament winners are as follows:

  • Kalem Negron, 69lbs (Beginner Novice)
  • Oumar Tounkara, 75lbs (Beginner Schoolboy)
  • Sulayman Bah, 109lbs (Advanced Schoolboy)
  • Jerimiah Jackson, 134lbs (Advanced Schoolboy)
  • Steve De la Cruz, 135lbs (Beginner Schoolboy)
  • Xavier Giles, 141lbs (Advanced Schoolboy)
  • David Robinson, 155lbs (Beginner Novice)
  • Capri Martin, 238lbs (Advanced Schoolboy)

Representing four divisions in beginner schoolboy, beginner novice, advanced novice and advanced schoolboy, the Beat the Streets junior league gained valuable experience from this co-ed round-robin tournament.

With most of the junior league competition centered in New York City, it was beneficial for the youth program to get out of the city and see some new competition. Many wrestlers had the opportunity to wrestle 3 to 4 matches with competitors from upstate New York. They wrestled hard and showed a lot of grit throughout the tournament resulting in 8 BTS champions, 6 runner ups, and 12 third place wins.

Mat Musings:

“I thought it was a tough tournament with good competition from upstate. BTS represented well. Most kids won at least two matches and placed. It was a great learning experience to see what needs to be focused on in the coming weeks.” - Jonathan Khoury, Eagle Academy Head Coach
