John Smith

John Smith, considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, is a six-time world-level champion in men's freestyle with two Olympic golds and four World Wrestling Championships. He won gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics then won three consecutive World Championships before claiming Olympic gold again at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Prior to his senior-level career, Smith won two NCAA individual titles and was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma State.

Smith took over as OSU head coach in 1991, and has guided the Cowboys to five NCAA team titles (1994, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and coached more than 30 NCAA individual champions and five Olympians. He is also a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year (1994, 2003).

The Del City, Oklahoma native ranks third all-time in wins among Division I wrestling coaches behind Dale Thomas and Harold Nichols.

Smith is a member of the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
