Welcome to Beat the Streets Academy. The mission of the BTS Academy is to prepare student-athletes for success both on and off the mat. We will focus on improving skills and providing experiences that will enable you to achieve your next level of success. Our goal is to provide student-athletes with the necessary skills and experiences to succeed beyond the mat and classroom, but throughout their entire life.
This application-only program consists of 27 male and 27 female high school-aged athletes. Although the deadline to apply for the 2020-2021 schoolyear has passed, student-athletes may make an appeal for special circumstance to join.
The Academy is made up of nine workshops on leadership spread throughout the year. These leadership topics were voted upon by members in order to ensure the program meets the needs and interest of participants. Student-athletes may attend Academy Days either in person or via zoom. Each Academy Day is made up of an enrichment session focused on leadership skills, a goal setting activity, small group activities and discussions, and guest speakers. The final Academy event of the year is our Annual Career Fair in which student-athletes will have the opportunity to speak with various organizations. Last year, we had 14 different organizations take part including Amazon, Varonis, A&E Network, Work2Train, numerous financial institutions, physical therapists, and nurses.
In hopes that the PSAL resumes physical activity on January 1st, we plan to host most of the Academy Days in the fall. As the spring schedule will be based around spring sports, we will adapt the schedule upon the announcement of the PSAL schedule.
Academy Members are required to attend 8 of the 10 Academy Day workshops, at least 25 Training Center or Training Camp practices (available as virtual or in-person), compete 20 total hours of volunteerism within BTS or the NYC community, and complete an end of year project. Any BTS Academy Member who is unable to attend an Academy Day, will be required to communicate this in advance as well as write a paper or complete a project on the topic from that day.
Academy Members will have the opportunity to receive special perks such as funded college visits, social outings, special clinics and camps (led by World and Olympic wrestlers), SAT & Regents Test tutors and access to the BTS Mentorship program (with BTS Board members and alumni as mentors). Also, seniors who finish the program will earn a $500 scholarship towards their college expenses.
