Assistant Coach

Beat the Streets New York (BTSNY), established in 2006, is a sport-based youth development organization whose mission is to develop the full human and athletic potential of urban youth and to strengthen the wrestling culture within New York City. BTSNY works with an average of 2,500 male and female student-athletes in all five boroughs, aged 10-18. Programs include the Academy, Junior League and Training Center. In addition, BTSNY partners with the New York City Department of Education’s Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) which sponsors a boys and co-ed season in the winter and a girls season in the spring.

Reporting to the Director of Programming, the Assistant Coach will help support junior league and high school programming. The primary responsibility of the Assistant Coach is to lead a specific middle school-aged program. 


Key Responsibilities:

Junior League ​

  • Actively communicate with student-athletes and coaches regarding weekly events 

  • Direct the fall season on-boarding process for 25 teams/coaches 

  • Lead planning for fall season match nights and tournaments, including scheduling officials, school venues, competing teams, etc. 

  • Plan competition travel including transportation logistics (Ie. driving a van)  

  • Manage the competition budget 

  • Plan and execute annual Top of the Podium (TOP) K-8 wrestling summer camp 

  • Manage coach stipends and annual school dues to BTSNY 

  • Coordinate and lead youth wrestling practice two times per week at BTSNY Training Center

PSAL (high school) Partnership

  • Assist Head Boys Coach with P.E. class takeovers for recruitment two to three times per week in the fall 

  • Build relationships with PSAL coaches/student-athletes by visiting/teaching at high school practices and attending PSAL competitions (and coaching PSAL student-athletes when necessary) 

  • Assist with planning and coaching responsibilities for pre & post-season high school competitions 

  • Collaborate in planning and coaching at holiday break camps 

Academy Program​​

  • Assist in marketing, promoting and recruiting Junior League and PSAL student-athletes to Academy program 

  • Support communication with wrestling clinicians and life-skill presenters for Academy enrichment days 

  • Facilitate distribution and collection of impact surveys

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED 

  • Valid driver’s license 

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills 

  • Pass USA Wrestling’s background check 

  • SafeSport certification 

  • CPR and first-aid certification

Desired Qualifications:   

  • Experience with sports-based youth development 

  • Experience working with diverse youth ages 11-18
