Head Coach

Beat the Streets New York (BTSNY), established in 2006, is a sport-based youth development organization whose mission is to develop the full human and athletic potential of urban youth and to strengthen the wrestling culture within New York City. BTSNY works with an average of 2,500 male and female student-athletes in all five boroughs, aged 10-18. Programs include the Academy, Junior League and Training Center. In addition, BTSNY partners with the New York City Department of Education’s Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) which sponsors a boys and co-ed season in the winter and a girls season in the spring.

Reporting to the Director of Programming, the Head Coach will play a critical role in delivering positive youth development on and off the mat in all five New York City boroughs. The primary responsibility of the Head Coach is to serve as a mentor by building strong relationships with our student-athletes and to motivate and support them in all they do. The Head Coach will also work closely with coaches and parents from the BTSNY Junior League and PSAL high school programs. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead wrestling practice at various BTSNY and PSAL programs 

  • Develop and implement a BTSNY Wrestling curriculum for the Training Center which can also be given to Jr. League / PSAL coaches. 

  • Promote participation at all BTSNY programs 

  • Work closely with Director of Programming to ensure proper data/record keeping regarding program visits, competitions and other program-related data 

  • Integrate social-emotional learning into wrestling competitions in and outside of New York City 

  • Manage annual wrestling budget 

  • Recruit student-athletes to BTSNY Academy and ensure attendance at Academy days 

  • Assist in planning and leading various aspects of BTSNY Academy, including wrestling practice, skills instruction, life skill workshops and various events associated with the Academy 

  • Plan and lead all relevant camps and clinics where boys participate during the year 

  • Co-lead all coach education, middle school and high school recruiting efforts 

  • Visit, evaluate and assist BTSNY’s Junior League and PSAL high school wrestling programs 

  • Attend and support all BTSNY enrichment program activities 

  • Create year-round competition schedule based on budget, arrange all aspects of competition trips including budget, transport, lodging, rosters, registrations, etc. 

  • Ensure each training center site meets safe standards for practice 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree 

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills 

  • Strong wrestling background as a coach and/or athlete 

  • Pass USA Wrestling’s background check 

  • Various certifications including CPR, First-Aid, Concussion Certified, Safe Sport (can complete upon being hired)    

  • Valid Drivers’ License 

Desired Qualifications:   

  • Experience with sports-based youth development 

  • Experience working with diverse youth ages 11-18 

  • Familiarity with NYC public schools
