The Beat the Streets Academy wrapped up its month-long Book Club reading of “Afsoon” last Thursday with a virtual Zoom talk by author Afsoon Johnston.
Johnston, the first-ever U.S. World Medalist in women’s freestyle wrestling, published her biography in September 2020. The book, which the Academy began reading in December, details Johnston’s immigration from Iran to America, as well as her path in trailblazing the sport of women's wrestling.
Over the course of the Book Club, Academy members participated in biweekly discussions focused on topics such as immigration, women in sports, and resilience.
This was the second-ever Book Club hosted by the Academy, with the first of which being a 2019 reading fn two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA World Cup champion Abby Wambach’s memoir “Wolfpack.”
