World champion and Olympian Zain Retherford will meet Ridge Lovett for the first time with a spot on the U.S. World Team on the line.

Fireworks are in store for the men’s freestyle 70 kg series between Ridge Lovett and Zain Retherford at 2026 Final X, presented by Kerberos Capital Management. Lovett and Retherford will clash for a spot on the 2026 U.S. World Team on June 19 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Lovett secured his Final X berth by dominating the field at the 2026 U.S. Open Championships, where he earned five wins to claim the 70 kg title. He recorded four technical falls and capped the tournament with an exciting 14-12 win over 2024 NCAA champion Caleb Henson in the championship match. Lovett also captured gold at the 2026 Pan American Championships, posting consecutive 10-0 technical falls in his first two matches before pinning Puerto Rico’s Victor Ivan Soto Rivera in the finals.
Following a nearly two-year hiatus after the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Retherford returned to competition at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in May. He qualified for Final X with a 3-2 semifinal win over 2026 NCAA champion Landon Robideau and a 2-1 win over Henson in the finals. Retherford is a four-time Senior World Team member, who won silver in 2022 and gold in 2023. He also claimed Pan American gold in 2023 and captured an age-group World title in 2012.
Lovett was a three-time All-American at the University of Nebraska, capturing Big Ten titles in each of his final two seasons. He qualified for four NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and claimed the 149-pound national title in his final season as a Husker in 2025.
Retherford was phenomenal throughout his time at Penn State, closing his career as a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, four-time All-American, three-time NCAA champion and three-time Big Ten Champion. After his freshman season, he never lost another match and finished his collegiate career with a 126-3 record.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Lovett and Retherford, as the two have never faced off internationally or at a USA Wrestling event.
What’s at stake at Final X?
Final X will determine the 2026 U.S. Senior World Team in two-of-three international disciplines — men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle. In total, 20 weight classes will be contested, 10 in each discipline. The top two U.S. athletes in each weight class will wrestle a best-of-three series at Final X to determine the U.S. representative for the 2026 Senior World Championships.
Lovett will make his Final X debut, while Retherford will make his fourth appearance and his first since 2023, when he defeated Tyler Berger 4-3 and 11-2 in their best-of-three series. Retherford owns Final X series wins over Berger, Jordan Oliver and Yianni Diakomihalis.
