Two-time World medalist James Green moves up to one weight to take on reigning World Team member David Carr.

A generational matchup between past U.S. World Team members James Green and David Carr will take place at 2026 Final X, presented by Kerberos Capital Management, on Friday, June 19 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The first meeting between the two stars comes with the 74 kg men’s freestyle World Championships berth hanging in the balance.
This year has continued Green's resurgence, as he seeks his eighth Senior World Team selection. The 33-year-old Green made his first Senior World Team in 2015, where he won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Las Vegas. He added a World silver medal in 2017 in Paris, France, and was instrumental in the U.S. edging Russia for the men’s freestyle team title. All seven of Green’s prior World Team runs came down a weight at 70 kg. He appears primed for a medal run this year after filling out to 74 kg.
Coming in nearly seven years younger than Green, Carr enters Newark as the reigning World Team member in the weight class. He qualified for a bronze medal match at last year’s World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, ultimately dropping a tight contest to Olympic champion and three-time World champion Zaurbek Sidakov of Russia to finish in fifth place. Carr is a two-time World medalist, earning U20 gold in 2019 and U17 bronze in 2016.
Green qualified for Final X by winning the 2026 U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas, a tournament that saw Carr take two domestic losses and finish in a surprising fourth place. Carr rebounded to win the 2026 Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament to cement his spot opposite Green at Final X.
From an international competition standpoint, Carr has outperformed Green this season. Carr earned gold medals at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix and the Zagreb Open Ranking Series event, while Green secured bronze at the Yasar Dogu and fifth place at the Zagreb Open Ranking Series. Both men were in the same bracket in Zagreb, but did not face one another.
Each had an exceptional college career at historic Division I institutions. Green was a four-time NCAA All-American for Nebraska from 2012 to 2015. He was just the second Husker to reach the NCAA podium four times. Carr was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time NCAA finalist for Iowa State, earning titles in 2021 and 2024. He was a rare five-time All-American for the Cyclones.
What’s at stake at Final X?
Final X will determine the 2026 U.S. Senior World Team in two-of-three international disciplines — men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle. In total, 20 weight classes will be contested, 10 in each discipline. The top two U.S. athletes in each weight class will wrestle a best-of-three series at Final X to determine the U.S. representative for the 2026 Senior World Championships.
It’ll be the third Final X appearance for the longtime contender Green. He is undefeated in Final X bouts, posting 2-0 series wins over Jason Chamberlain in 2018 and Ryan Deakin in 2019. Similarly, Carr takes the Final X mats for the third time. He won a true-third match over Joey LaVallee in 2022 and took the 2-0 series win over Mitchell Mesenbrink last year.

Green has an extended history with Beat the Streets Annual Benefit events. He participated in exhibition matches in 2017, 2018 and 2019, with wins over Nobuyoshi Takojima of Japan in Times Square, Franklin Maren Castillo at South Street Seaport at Pier 17, and Anthony Ashnault at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. This is his first appearance at a unified Final X and Beat the Streets event. Carr’s lone Beat the Streets event was last year’s Final X series win over Mesenbrink.
